Femininity crowned. These portraits by Harriet Mia (Lulu) are painted with acrylic on repurposed dhow sails from Lamu, Kenya. Fabrics that once carried fishermen, traders, and the weight of the ocean. Salt-stained, sun-bleached, and scarred by use, these sails bring their own memories to the canvas. Lulu’s work is intuitive and observational, capturing fragments of emotion in layered faces and soft strokes. Through colour, texture, and reclaimed material, she transforms the ordinary into quiet visual dialogues about humanity and presence.
