Mwadzame

Mwadzame Omar is an interdisciplinary artist, and a self-taught graphic designer based in Nairobi, Kenya. His love for graphic design started at an early age inspired by old Kenyan ads. After completing high school, Mwadzame and a friend (Brian Baliach) formed Koroboi (a creative duo specializing in photography & storytelling).

The two worked on concepts influenced by African culture, for example; the Ndondi (boxing) project that tells a tale of an aspiring boxer on a tight budget in a quest to realise his dreams of becoming a pro-boxer. In their Mji Mkuu project, Koroboi visited Old Town, Mombasa and depicted the architecture, food, & the lifestyle of the Swahili. The duo decided to explore solo creative pursuits, with Mwadzame tapping into graphic design.

Mwadzame’s work touches on themes like nostalgia, culture, & politics, identifiable through vintage photos and the use of bright colours. His major achievements, so far, include; partnering to establish The Gin Trump, a handcrafted Gin kit that enables you to create flavourful Gin in the comfort of your home. He has also had his first solo exhibition at Nairobi Street Kitchen, a premier food market in the heart of Nairobi. In 2020, he launched a paint and sip event called Sip Simmer with his partner focused on educating audiences on the art of gin tasting.

If he’s not busy cooking up new concepts, or talking about himself in third person, Mwadzame is playing football or engaging in banter with like-minded colleagues.
